Rigid foam insulation is made of closed cell foam boards. These boards can be used to insulate many parts of a home, including the roof, floors, walls, and foundation. Although you might think rigid foam insulation would be very thick and/or heavy, it is not. It is actually a fairly thin, lightweight insulating material that offers a lot of protection. Installing rigid foam insulation also increases the structural stability of your home, helps limit moisture buildup and mildew-growth, and provides an extra bit of sound insulation as well.


As with other types of foam insulation, rigid foam insulation has a high R-value, typically ranging from R-4 to R-7 per inch of insulation. For readers new to home insulation, that’s two or three times greater than insulating materials of similar thickness!

Research the ratings, reviews, and prices of several rigid foam insulation contractors before deciding which installer you’d like to work on your home. Also be sure to ask about the contractor’s experience with air and/or vapor barrier systems, in addition to their experience with rigid foam insulation installation.
